Mercabarna Leverages NebulOuS for Real-Time Traffic Management

Mercabarna faces the daily challenge of managing high-intensity logistics. Hundreds of vehicles transport goods on tight schedules across its expansive site, which includes internal roads, docks, and strategic access points. In such a dynamic environment, efficient internal traffic management is crucial for smooth operations.

A year ago, the first public release of NebulOuS launched, and Mercabarna became an early adopter, applying its technology to tackle one of their primary operational hurdles: intelligent internal traffic management. Leveraging NebulOuS, Mercabarna has successfully designed and deployed a system that adapts to real-time environmental conditions, flexibly orchestrating various technological components and dynamically optimizing resource usage.

As part of this innovative use case, all CCTV cameras have now been strategically installed in key locations across the Mercabarna site, and the system is fully operational under real-world conditions.

The NebulOuS-powered system automatically detects vehicles, reads their license plates, and classifies them by type. Crucially, all video processing is performed locally using edge computing technologies. This approach eliminates the need to send large volumes of data to the cloud, ensuring greater efficiency and enhanced data privacy.

The collected information is seamlessly integrated into a web platform, providing real-time traffic status visualisation and access to historical data. This platform also enables scenario simulation and the implementation of more effective traffic management policies based on objective insights.

This project signifies a significant leap forward in the transition towards a smarter, more sustainable, and adaptive urban logistics model. Mercabarna remains committed to collaborating with the NebulOuS consortium to further explore the full potential of this transformative technology.
